The Department of Physical Education of NPU originated from the Physical Education Group of NPU in 1938. In 1957, the Physical Education Teaching and Research Department of NPU was established and renamed the Physical Education Department in 1990. As an independent teaching and academic support department of NPU. The Department of Physical Education adheres to the school motto of "Virtue, Courage and Diligence", the school spirit of "Three Realities and One Innovation", and insists on the school-running philosophy of "taking students as the root, educating people as the basis, scholars as the priority, academics as the soul, and responsibility as the priority". The Department of Physical Education is mainly responsible for the teaching of compulsory and elective physical education courses for undergraduates, and also responsible for mass sports activities, sports competitions, physical fitness testing, training and management of high-level sports teams, sports scientific research and discipline construction, sports venue management and services, etc.

Strong faculty

The Department of Physical Education currently has 84 faculty members, including 65  teachers .4 professors, 31 associate professors, 21 lecturers, 9 teaching assistants. Wang Libin, former center of the Chinese men's basketball team, flag bearer of the Chinese national team at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, is currently the head coach of our school's men's basketball team. The Department of Physical Education currently has 2 international referees and 15 national referees, among whom Wang Cheng participated in the refereeing work at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

The Gymnasium Management Center of the Physical Education Department is responsible for the daily management of the school gymnasium. There are currently 6 indoor sports venues including the Aoxiang Gymnasium, Natatorium and Comprehensive Training Hall, 3 track and field fields (2 of which have stands), and 148 outdoor courts. Aoxiang Gymnasium is a large comprehensive sports center, covering an area of 14,000 square meters (including auxiliary hall), with nearly 6,000 seats in the stands, which can host basketball, volleyball, badminton, table tennis and other competitions. Aoxiang natatorium covers an area of 7,500 square meters, with about 1,000 seats for spectators, equipped with indoor standard swimming pool and outdoor training pool, which can host swimming competitions swimming competitions above provincial level. Our school has taken advantage of its sports venue resources to host many important events, including the CUBA Northwest Division and the Top 16, National College student Badminton Championship, and CBA-CUBA Youth Tournament, etc. In 2021, Aoxiang Gymnasium will host the 14th Games Women's Adult Volleyball Competition and the Special Olympics Sitting Volleyball Competition.
